The HC TIWAG Innsbruck is still top of the win2day ICE Hockey League after beating Asiago 5:1 on Sunday. While the BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg celebrated their first league win, only the Moser Medical Graz99ers were successful on the road.
The BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg wrote a piece of ice hockey history on Sunday. The league newcomer celebrated its first win on the second matchday of the win2day ICE Hockey League, the team from Feldkirch won 2:1 at home against EC-KAC. The Klagenfurt team had more of the game - as in the opening defeat in Innsbruck - but cut their teeth on ex-Redjacket goalie David Madlener. The Pioneers, on the other hand, were very efficient and took the lead in the 22nd minute: Patrick Spannring scored the first league goal after an ideal Macierzynski pass. At the beginning of the final period, Rok Ticar (42nd) equalised on the power play, the only one of 48 shots on goal that Madlener could not stop. After a counterattack, Kevin Macierzynski - this time after Spannring's assist - ensured the Pioneers' historic victory.
Innsbruck still top of the table
HC TIWAG Innsbruck remain at the top of the table after the second gameday. The Tyroleans fell behind early against Asiago (Saracino, 7th), but the Italians could not keep up their performance from the victory in Graz. Adam Helewka (11.) and Brady Shaw (20./PP) turned the game in favour of the hosts before the end of the first period. After another powerplay goal by Shaw, Lukas Bär made the preliminary decision even in the middle period. Martin Ulmer scored the final goal in the 46th minute to make it 5:1.
Bolzano remains first chaser
HK SZ Olimpija started the new season in Bolzano and was soon able to cheer. In a balanced first period, Jaka Sturm (8th) scored the only goal. The home side had to chase this deficit until well over halfway through the match, despite having an overwhelming advantage. After chances every minute, Mike Halmo (36th) scored the equaliser on power play, shortly afterwards neo-captain Daniel Frank found the back of the net after a rebound to give Bolzano the lead. The Foxes gave their opponents more space in the third period and lurked on the counterattack. Three minutes before the final siren, Mitch Hults scored after a double pass with Frattin, while Mike Dalhuisen added an empty-netter to make it 4:1.
First wins of the season for Graz and Pustertal
The Moser Medical Graz99ers were efficient in their first win of the season and could rely on goalie Christian Engstrand. The Styrians took the lead in Linz after only three minutes with a powerplay goal by Viktor Granholm. Twelve seconds before the end of the period Michael Schiechl increased the lead to 2:0. While the Upper Austrians failed again and again against Engstrand - who finally celebrated a shutout - Sam Antonitsch (35./PP) scored the third goal for the guests. In the final period Tobias Fladeby also added to the scorers' list with a shot into the far corner - 0:4.
After a goalless first period, HC Pustertal took the lead in their home game against Villach in the 28th minute: In power play Filip Ahl scored just under the crossbar. Shortly before the end of the period, VSV captain Derek Joslin scored a well-deserved equaliser to make it 1:1. In the third period, the home side set the tone and Dante Hannoun put the yellow and black team back in front in the 45th minute. After Dan Catenacci made it 3:1, the Carinthians took goalie JP Lamoureux off the ice for another skater. Two minutes before the end, Marc-Olivier Roy scored to make it 4:1. With just a few seconds to go, Alexander Rauchenwald got his name to the scoring charts with a shorthanded merker. While the team from Bruneck celebrated its first win of the season, Villach is still waiting for a point.
