Innsbruck's Caleb Herbert gets one-game suspension

Caleb Herbert (#91) of HC TWK Innsbruck "die Haie", time approximately 60:08, was involved in an incident deemed as Kneeing (IIHF Rule 152). The video evidence was sent to the EBEL Player Safety Committee (PSC), which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’.

According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the EBEL PSC, player Caleb Herbert (#91) of HC TWK Innsbruck "die Haie", will receive supplementary discipline under rule 152 – Kneeing.

On September 28th, in Innsbruck, an incident occurred involving Innsbruck player #91 Caleb Herbert which is deemed kneeing. With the opposing player, #91 Taylor Vause, gaining puck possession in the defensive zone and moving up ice, Innsbruck player Caleb Herbert approached head on. The reason for supplementary discipline is the body check was delivered through a right leg wide stance knee extension, making direct leg to leg contact. Primary contact was not delivered through body to body or hip contact.

As the video shows, Taylor Vause is receiving a outlet pass from his backside and on his backhand. This created Taylor Vause to have his attention, back and at the puck. Reading the outlet pass, Caleb Herbert approaches Taylor Vause with a regard for the puck and to make a body check. However, through contact, Caleb Herbert made no hip or shoulder contact and instead, leg to leg contact.

Caleb Herbert started from a stationary position, took a stride directly at oncoming player Taylor Vause and entered with a wide leg right leg extension stance. It is felt that Caleb Herbert made leg contact through a quick reaction and not with intent. The incident is deemed recklessly endangering and a high potential situation of creating a serious injury.

Effective immediately, Innsbruck player #91 Caleb Herbert is suspended for 1 game and fined 250.00 Euros.
