Italy wins World Championship opener

The Italian national team kicked off the Division IA World Championship in Sfântu Gheorghe, Romania, with a 4-1 victory over Japan on Sunday. Tommy Purdeller, the win2day ICE Hockey League’s Young Star of the Year, scored twice to lead the way.

Italy made a strong start to the Division I Group A tournament, defeating Japan 4-1 in their first game. The star of the night was 21-year-old Tommy Purdeller, who netted two goals and added an assist. Alex Ierullo, who scored his first-ever goal for Italy, and Daniel Tedesco also found the back of the net. Goaltender Davide Fadani impressed with a save percentage of 94.7%. Up next: Italy faces Ukraine tomorrow at 11:30 AM (local time).

Italy came out strong right from the start, with Purdeller opening the scoring early before Ierullo doubled the lead. In the second period, Purdeller struck again and set up Tedesco for Italy’s fourth goal. Japan managed a consolation goal through Hanzawa, but Fadani stood tall with several key saves to secure the win. In the final frame, the Azzurri stayed solid defensively and closed out a well-deserved opening victory.
