On Sunday, the EC Red Bull Salzburg suffered the first defeat of the season to EC-KAC, 4:6. Second-placed Bolzano also lost out to league newcomer BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg. While the spusu Vienna Capitals and HK SZ Olimpija celebrated home wins, the Moser Medical Graz99ers prevailed in Villach.
The EC-KAC celebrated its fourth win in a row on Sunday. Lukas Haudum was the match-winner for the Carinthians with three goals. Already in the first three minutes, the forward ensured a 2:0 lead for the visitors. Although Dennis Robertson scored the first of three Salzburg power play goals in the first period, Lucas Lessio (26th) restored the two-goal lead for the Klagenfurters. In a racy duel on equal terms, the Red Bulls equalised in front of almost 2,200 spectators with goals from Wukovits and Thaler to make it 3:3. But in the 45th minute it was Haudum again who celebrated his hat-trick. Jensen Aabo and Bischofberger scored the other goals for the guests, while only Harnisch was able to reduce the lead for Salzburg.
The BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg also scored two quick goals in their match against HCB Südtirol Alperia, after barely three and a half minutes the hosts led thanks to Luka Maver and Hampus Eriksson. The second-placed team from Bolzano struck back with a brace in the middle period, with Christian Thomas and Luca Frigo making it 2:2. The most beautiful goal of the game was scored by Christian Bull, who finished a solo in the 35th minute. As on Friday against Linz, the Pioneers had to accept a late equaliser (Halmo, 55th), but this time the Vorarlbergers left the ice as winners. A capital mistake by the Bolzano defence gave Marcel Zitz the puck and he scored right into the corner. With a 4:3 home win, the Vorarlberg took revenge for the opening defeat in Bolzano and at the same time inflicted the first defeat of the season on HCB.
99ers get victory in Villach
The Moser Medical Graz99ers continued their upward trend and won away at EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV. Villach were the better team in the first period, but failed again and again to score against Graz goalie Christian Engstrand. With a powerplay goal by Michael Boivin, who scored from the blue line, the Styrians took the lead early in the middle period. The Carinthians, however, had the appropriate answer ready only four minutes later and equalised - also on power play - through Mattinen. Although the Graz team had to cope with a number of absences, they fought a duel on equal terms with VSV and rewarded themselves in the 50th minute. After an energetic Alagic push, Zintis Zusevics scored the decisive goal for a 2:1 away win.
Ljubljana and Vienna celebrate home wins
HK SZ Olimpija scored their second win of the season against Hydro Fehérvár AV19 on Sunday. The Slovenians took a 2:0 lead in the first period with goals from Simsic (6th) and Kapel (18th/PP). But the Hungarians came back impressively in the middle period. Vertes (22nd), Nilsson (26th) and Bartalis (38th) turned the game in favour of the guests. But the momentum swung the other way again when Simsic equalised and forced overtime. In this extra session, a penalty against Alex Petan was the visitors' undoing and Alexander Magovac scored to give the "green dragons" a 4:3 victory.
The spusu Vienna Capitals got off to a lightning start at home against HC Psutertal. Max Zimmer scored his first goal for the Vienna Capitals after just eleven seconds. The 24-year-old US-American converted his own rebound to take an early lead. The home side continued to set the tone, but failed again and again - as in the last games - to make the most of their chances. Lucas Kainz increased the lead in the 28th minute and Sascha Bauer made it 3:0 early in the third period, but Pustertal came back with goals from Luchuk (51st) and Bardaro (59th). The guests pulled goalie Smith once again, but were not rewarded for it: Bradley and Gregoire ensured the 5:2 home victory with empty-net goals.
