KAC wins CHL opener | Graz suffers narrow defeat in Energie Steiermark Trophy

In the Champions Hockey League, runner-up EC-KAC won their opening game against the Rouen Dragons (FRA) 4:2. Champion EC Red Bull Salzburg, on the other hand, were narrowly beaten 3:4 by Swedish champion Skellefteå AIK. Four teams of the win2day ICE Hockey League also played test matches on Friday. The Moser Medical Graz99ers were narrowly defeated by Red Bull Munich in the Energie Steiermark Trophy. The Pioneers Vorarlberg and Olimpija Ljubljana were also narrowly defeated. Steinbach Black Wings Linz, on the other hand, had no chance.

The EC-KAC had a successful start in the 2024/25 Champions Hockey League season. The runner-up in the win2day ICE Hockey League won 4:2 against the Rouen Dragons (FRA). Matt Fraser put the KAC ahead in the fourth minute of the game. Nick Petersen made it 2:0 in the eleventh minute and Klagenfurt also scored twice in the second period. Senna Peeters increased the lead to 3:0 in the 27th minute, Johannes Bischofberger scored just twelve seconds after Rouen had made it 1:3 to make it 4:1. Although the home side were able to reduce the deficit to 2:4 at the start of the final period, the KAC did not let anything else get in their way and deservedly prevailed in the end.

Champion EC Red Bull Salzburg suffered a narrow opening defeat against Skellefteå AIK. The current Swedish champion went into the first period break with a 1:0 lead. Four goals were added to the scoreboard in the second period. Peter Schneider first equalized for Salzburg (25.) before the visitors managed a double strike. However, Thomas Raffl brought the Red Bulls back to within one goal just a few minutes later (32.). In the final period, RBS even managed to equalize through Lucas Thaler (44.), but in the end they narrowly missed the overtime as Andreas Johnsson scored for the second time that evening with two-and-a-half minutes remaining to secure the victory for the visitors.

Last-minute defeat for Graz at the Energie Steiermark Trophy
In addition to the two Champions Hockey League games, four test games with win2day ICE Hockey League participation also took place on Friday. The Moser Medical Graz99ers played their first game at the Energie Steiermark Trophy and were beaten by Red Bull Munich despite a strong performance. The 99ers conceded the decisive goal with 40 seconds to go in the 1:2 defeat against the Germans. Rok Ticar scored the Styrians' only goal in the third minute of the game. In the second game of the Energie Steiermark Trophy, Graz will face the Stavanger Oilers in the third-place game on Saturday at 16:00. In addition to Graz, the Steinbach Black Wings Linz, Pioneers Vorarlberg and Olimpija Ljubljana were also defeated. The Black Wings had no chance at České Budějovice and lost 3:7, the Pioneers only just came up short against the Ravensburg Towerstars (3:4), Olimpija were only beaten 1:2/SO by the Augsburger Panther in the first game of the Hansjörg Brunner Memorial.
