Thursday night closed the return-to-play phase of Alps Hockey League with four second leg games. While the EC Die Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel and the HC Pustertal Wölfe each turned their duel around, the HK SZ Olimpija Ljubljana and the Red Bull Hockey Juniors fulfilled their role as favorites with clear-cut wins. Further, tonight’s game HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice against EC-KAC II has been postponed indefinitely, for medical precautionary measures due to Covid-19 contact persons.
All postponed return-to-play games have already been rescheduled and will be played later in the season. The exact dates of the games can be found on the website.
Kitzbühel turns duel with Lustenau
The EC Die Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel managed to turn the duel with the EHC Lustenau around, after winning the return leg 6:1 to clinch a 7:4 on aggregate. The “eagles” got their second duel win in the return-to-play phase to reach regular season stage two with six points. League’s third best scorer Mikael Johansson took the lead for the hosts halfway through the first. With the Wernerson brothers each having a three-point night and Dominik Frank saving 95,7% the Tyrolese controlled the game against the Vorarlberg side and cheered a deserved win finally.
Pustertal strikes back too
After Saturday’s tight defeat, the HC Pustertal Wölfe stroke back against the Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan to snatch up a 3:1 win after overtime to turn around the duel winning 5:4 on aggregate. Pustertal now has seven points taken to stage two of regular season, while the Sterzing lost its first return-to-play duel. The “wolves” got off a perfect start, leading after 67 seconds. After the guests tied it within the first, the second ended goalless. In the 48th minute Alex De Lorenzo Meo sent the game to overtime, where Tommaso Traversa’s first goal of the season gave Pustertal the three points.
Ljubljana takes maximum of points
After HK SZ Olimpija Ljubljana took a huge shut-out win in the first leg against the Steel Wings Linz, the reigning champions cruised past the Austrian side again, taking an 8:3 road-win. With Jan Drozg and Miha Zajc posting a brace, the “dragons” had control over the game from the first face-off on. Linz still fought until the end, winning the last frame 2:1 to get a good feeling for the upcoming round-robin. The Slovenians finally won the duel 17:3 on aggregate to finish the return-to-play phase with the maximum of nine points.
Salzburg wins its first R2P duel
After the Red Bull Hockey Juniors lost both previous R2P duels against Pustertal and Sterzing despite winning one game each, the Austrian side dominated the clash with the Rittner Buam, grabbing the first three points of the season with a 16:2 on aggregate. Sebastian Cimmerman, who had a brace in the end, got the “Red Bulls” on the scoreboard early, while the Austrians managed to get the preliminary decision with five more unanswered in the second. With 20 saves Salzburg’s netminder Florian Bugl celebrated his first shutout in the Alps Hockey League. Ritten had to take the highest defeat ever in AHL history.
