Lady Hawks hand St. Pölten their first AWHL defeat

The VSV Lady Hawks handed the Sabres St. Pölten their first loss of the ongoing win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League season on Saturday. The Carinthian side claimed a 4–2 victory at Villach’s Stadthalle.

While the EVB Eagles South Tyrol extended their lead atop the European Women’s Hockey League standings, the DEC Salzburg Eagles and the Graz99ers Huskies celebrated home wins.

Facing the reigning AWHL champions, the Villach team overturned an early deficit. Ashley Taciuk had put St. Pölten ahead, but Adela Vavrova turned the game around with two goals before the first intermission. In the second period, Siri Zimmermann made it 3–1. Despite conceding a late goal and having to survive a five-minute penalty, the Hawks stayed composed — Liga Miljone sealed the win with an empty-netter. Although St. Pölten fired more than twice as many shots, the defending champions suffered their first AWHL defeat of the season.

The EVB Eagles South Tyrol strengthened their top position in the European Women’s Hockey League with a 5–1 road victory against the Lakers Kärnten, who actually recorded more shots on goal. The Bolzano squad jumped to a 2–0 lead within the first three minutes thanks to a quick double strike from Kristen Guerriero. It was 3–1 after the opening period before the Eagles added two more in the final frame.

The DEC Salzburg Eagles earned a tight 2–1 shootout win against MAC Budapest, with goaltender Kristiana Apsite making 37 saves to become the night’s hero. Gabrielle Davidson gave Salzburg the lead in the third period, before Tamara Gondos equalized late in regulation. In the shootout, Rebecca Clarke clinched the home victory.

After six unsuccessful attempts, the Graz99ers Huskies finally had reason to celebrate, winning their seventh game of the season 1–0 against Budapest Jegkorong Akademia. Goaltender Veronika Padelkova shone with 34 saves and a shutout, while Tamara Grascher scored the game-winning goal in the 44th minute.
