Release from 03.11.2023
Brian Lebler broke Thomas Koch's record for goals scored in the win2day ICE Hockey League on Friday. After his hat-trick in Steinbach Black Wings Linz's 4-2 home win over HK SZ Olimpija, the 35-year-old captain of Linz now also has 359 goals recorded.
At the same time, EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV struggled to a 3-2 win over the Moser Medical Graz99ers to move back up to second place in the table. Leader EC Red Bull Salzburg, which had to cope with a total of ten absences due to illness, lost 0-3 on the road to HCB Südtirol Alperia, while HC Pustertal Wölfe (2-0 against HCI) were the second team from South Tyrol to celebrate a shutout victory. Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey and the spusu Vienna Capitals won after overtime. Carsen Twarynski scored his second OT game-winning goal for the Vienna Capitals.
The lone Saturday game in the win2day ICE Hockey League is Hydro Fehérvár AV19 against BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg, with the game being broadcastet on www.live.ice.hockey (PPV) from 5.30 pm.
As of Friday evening, Brian Lebler, together with Thomas Koch, holds the record for goals scored in the win2day ICE Hockey League (from the 2000/01 season; note). The two athletes each hold 359 goals. Lebler equaled the record with a hat-trick in Steinbach Black Wings Linz's 4-2 home win over HK SZ Olimpija, which was the main reason for the Upper Austrians' third home win in a row. The Slovenians lost their eighth consecutive meeting with the Black Wings.
South Tyrolean teams cheer shutouts each
Runners-up HCB Südtirol Alperia continued their upward trend in their home game against champions EC Red Bull Salzburg, as the "Foxes" celebrated an unchallenged 3-0 victory, winning their sixth game in a row and keeping a clean sheet for the second time this season. Gianluca Vallini saved all 27 shots on goal and Daniel Mantenuto scored a brace. Salzburg were decimated in the Sparkasse Arena, with ten regular players missing through illness. Goalie Simon Wolf and Kalle Myllymaa made their ICE debuts.
The HC Pustertal Wölfe cheered a shutout too – for the third time in the current championship – with their 2-0 home win over HC TIWAG Innsbruck - Die Haie, which were able to celebrate another victory after four defeats in a row. Matthias Mantinger put the "Wolves" ahead after 14 minutes with a magnificent top shelf goal with a backhand, Jason Akeson (42./PP1) provided the preliminary decision.
Villach back in second place
EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV have put themselves back on Salzburg's heels, as the "Adler" secured a 3-2 win at home over the Moser Medical Graz99ers. Villach benefited from their efficient powerplay, as the Carinthians scored in both occasions.
Local rivals EC-KAC were beaten 1-2 for the third time in a row, losing to Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey in overtime. The Austrian record champions, with captain Thomas Hundertpfund back in the line-up, defended their place in the top six with the point win. The Italians, for whom William Rapuzzi scored the game-winner, are now just two points behind the top 10.
Twarynski scores second OT game-winning for Vienna
Carsen Twarynski scored his second OT game-winning goal for the spusu Vienna Capitals to secure a 3-2 home win after overtime over the BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg. The Viennese team ended a five-game losing streak in home games. The "Caps" trailed twice, but Cheek (15.) and Weinger (42.) were able to equalize each time.
