The spusu Vienna Capitals had a great chance to push the door to the quarterfinals wide open on Thursday. But instead HK SZ Olimpija Ljubljana managed another step towards direct playoff qualification. The Slovenians celebrated their third win of the season in just as many encounters with the Viennese. As in the two previous duels, the game was on a knife edge for a long time. After an early lead of the Dragons, the Viennese promptly took command with a double strike. In the middle period, however, Ljubljana again took the lead with two goals within two minutes. Until five minutes before the end, the Viennese kept within striking distance before they had to take more risks and finally lost 2:5.

The Caps slipped back to fifth place in the table as a result of the defeat. The lead over the sixth-placed Slovenians shrank to a minimum, so that they can leave the Viennese behind already tomorrow, Friday, if they conquer by just one point more. With the fifth and sixth place in the table, however, both teams would currently be in the quarterfinals. However, HC Tesla Orli Znojmo - currently in seventh place - is in waiting position and could move into the top-6 already on Friday itself. On Sunday, it could now come to the big showdown of these two teams, for a quarterfinal spot.
