Olimpija Ljubljana take big step towards quarter-finals

Olimpija Ljubljana claimed an important win in the only Tuesday game of the win2day ICE Hockey League, defeating Pioneers Vorarlberg and taking a big step towards securing a quarter-final spot. The Slovenians, now sitting fifth, already hold a 19-point advantage over the seventh-placed Vienna Capitals.

In the only Tuesday game of the week, Olimpija Ljubljana skated to a 5:2 home victory over Pioneers Vorarlberg. The hosts controlled the game from the opening face-off but were initially unable to beat Pioneers goaltender David Madlener. Against the run of play and while shorthanded, Marcel Mahkovec opened the scoring in the final minute of the first period. Ljubljana doubled their lead early in the middle frame before the Pioneers responded through Ramon Schnetzer. In the final period, however, the hosts raised the tempo once more and eventually pulled away to a 5:2 win.

With this victory, the Green Dragons move up to fifth place in the standings and take a major step towards the quarter-finals of the win2day ICE Hockey League. The teams currently sitting seventh are already 19 points behind Ljubljana.
