League leaders HK SŽ Olimpija continued their run of success in the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League with a 3:2 win at reigning champions EC-KAC on Tuesday. While the spusu Vienna Capitals won the chasing duel against Hydro Fehérvár AV19, the Moser Medical Graz99ers, HC TIWAG Innsbruck and HC Pustertal also celebrated home victories. In addition, HCB Südtirol Alperia secured three points in Dornbirn.
In the first duel of the season between EC-KAC and HK SZ Olimpija, the guests were initially ice-cold in power play as Tomazevic and Cimzar scored for the league leaders. The reigning champions got on the scoreboard shortly after the restart and even managed to equalize in the final period through Thomas Koch (48th). But three minutes before the end, league top scorer Guillaume Leclerc gave the Slovenians the lead again and they managed to keep the tight 3:2. Olimpija thus extended its lead in the standings, while KAC slipped to eighth place.
In the chasing duel between the spusu Vienna Capitals and Hydro Fehérvár AV19 it remained goalless for a long time. It was not until the 30th minute that Matt Neal broke the spell and put the Viennese in the lead. Shortly before the second break, the hosts increased the lead to 3:0 with a brace. With his second goal of the game, Nicolai Meyer fixed the preliminary decision, in the end the Capitals celebrated their eighth home victory in a row with a 5:2 final result.
Innsbruck and Bolzano improve
After HC TIWAG Innsbruck had to admit defeat twice at the weekend after a long league break, the Tyroleans returned to winning ways with a 6:3 victory over HC Tesla Orli Znojmo. After a scoreless first period, Messner (22nd) and Lattner (31st) gave the hosts a 2:0 lead. The Czechs came within one goal three times in the final period, but the fifth-placed home side held their nerves and won their second duel of the season with Znojmo.
HCB Südtirol Alperia is now in sixth place. In the away game in Dornbirn, Daniel Ciampini celebrated a dream debut, with the forward scoring already in the eighth minute. Although the South Tyroleans had a two-goal lead twice, Dornbirn equalized at the beginning of the final period. But a powerplay goal by Nick Plastino put the runners-up on the winning track, Findlay added an empty-netter with one second left for a 5:3 away win.
Important wins for Graz and Pustertal
The Moser Medical Graz99ers and the EC GRAND Immo VSV delivered an open exchange of blows. Although Villach took the lead already after 102 seconds through top goalgetter Scott Kosmachuk, the Styrians turned the game around in the first period. VSV equalized twice in the course of the game, but the Graz team had the longer breath: In the 49th minute Simon Hjalmarsson made it 4:3 and the decision. This allowed the tenth-placed Styrians to keep the gap to eleventh place and the first place outside the playoff positions unchanged.
Because HC Pustertal also recorded three points. The South Tyroleans took a 2:0 lead in their home game against Steinbach Black Wings Linz. But the bottom team from Upper Austria even managed to equalize in the second period. However, with a brilliant final period and five goals, the hosts clinched a clear 7:3 victory in the end. Dante Hannoun scored twice.
