Gabriele Parini (#44) of S.G. Cortina Hafro, time 39:57, made contact with an opponent deemed as Slashing IIHF Rule 61. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error. Liable to happen as a consequence of, by intending to affect an opponent through a reactionary or accidental motion or the incident is deemed careless causing negligence.

Saturday night, January 11, in Cortina, Cortina D'Man #44 Gabriele Parini was involved in an incident on Salzburg forward #17 Daniel Assavolyuk that is deemed slashing.

As the video shows, Assavolyuk won a race to the puck and was on a break-away, with no one between himself and the opposing goaltender. Parini is in skating pursuit, located behind Assavolyuk, when he raises his stick, turns his stick blade over and delivers a force-full slash with the toe of the stick, directly to the shoulder area of Assavolyuk.

This is slashing.

It is important to note, Parini is beat on the play and skating hard to get a possible defensive position, he realizes he cannot make a legal play. Parini then chose to use his stick to interfere with the play. Parini raised his stick above his head, put his hands together to increase force, turned his stick in such way, that not the heel or the shaft is hitting his opponent, but instead it is the toe of the stick that makes primary contact. Such actions can lead to serious injuries, especially at the height Parini contacted his opponent, which is why it was determined to be worthy of supplementary discipline.

Effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Gabriele Parini for 1 game.

To summarize:

  • This is slashing
