The 64-year-old general secretary of the Austrian Olympic Committee (ÖOC) was entrusted with additional tasks by the European Olympic Committees, acting as EOC treasurer on an interim basis. "At the beginning of the year I deputized for a diseased colleague. What started as a short-term assistance, turned into a time-consuming engagement. In recent weeks and months I must realize that these two functions are logistically no longer compatible", said Mennel.

The departure from hockey will happen in an orderly manner. Peter Mennel has asked Erste Bank Eishockey Liga vice-president Dr. Karl Safron to fulfil the president's duties temporary. "I would like to thank Karl, my presidium members, the league's management, the clubs and the Austrian Hockey Federation for the intensive cooperation. It has been six challenging and great years", added Mennel.

In 2013 Mennel was voted president of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga and two years ago he was unanimously re-elected. Erste Bank Eishockey Liga give thanks to Peter Mennel for many years of dedicated work and abundant merits. During his term, support measures for national players - as the elimination of the tryout period or lately the adaption of the point value system with a reduction of spots for transfer card players - were decided. Among others, the co-foundation of Champions Hockey League, the infrastructural and digital upgrading, the full-video-presence in Austria and all participating countries of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga as well as the development of an overall league concept were realized in this period and contributed to the positive trend of this international ice hockey project.
