Pustertal reaches the 100-point mark

On Saturday leader HC Pustertal reached the 100-point mark this season with a 6:0 home win against VEU Feldkirch. While Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan ended HK SŽ Olimpija's winning-streak, new third-placed Red Bull Hockey Juniors overtook Rittner Buam with a road victory. In addition, reigning champions Asiago Hockey 1935 and EHC Alge Elastic Lustenau kept their chances for a top 4 spot alive.

Klagenfurt won his third consecutive game as they returned from the Italian road-games with six points after beating first Fassa and then Milano. The latter team must give up Platzer, who was injured. Minute after minute the Austrian team grew in the game as they scored with Kompain at the end of a hectic action. In the second half everything happened and more. Aleksander Petrov evened out the score. Then the guests took back the lead with Kreuzer after a mistake of the home team. But Milan answered and in seven minutes (from 25' to 32') made three goals with Schina, Asinelli and Re. But the EC-KAC-II reorganized as they resumed the result with three goals in another five minutes. A few seconds before the end of central period, Milan changed the goalkeeper:  Tesini was in, outside Valle Da Rin. But in the third period the Austrians controlled the game accomplice the 5 penalties inflicted to the red-blue team. Ploner and Simon Hammerle (empty net goal) allowed to Klagenfurt to win by 7:4. The Carinthians have the same points as the Bregenzerwald while Milan couldn’t go beyond the 16th position.

Bregenzerwald missed Maximilian Hohenegg, Julian Metzler and captain Christian Ban, while young goalie Alexander Schmidt made his home debut. The Villach-born netminder had some big saves in the opening period. At the other end Daniel Ban opened the scoring i nthe 16th minute. Early in the second the hosts missed some good opportunities and it took some time until Panu Hyyppä doubled the score with a power play goal. Only 26 seconds later Robbie Bina got Asiago on the scoreboard. In the third the reigning champions killed a 2-man shorthanded situation and Marco Rosa tied it at two in the 52th minute. Despite Bregenzerwald pressing for another lead, the Italians took the win thanks to Lorenzo Casetti's game winner with 85 seconds to go. With this road victory, Asiago kept their chances for a top 4 spot alive.

In the fight for pre-palyoffs Kitzbühel suffered a big setback in their home game against Cortina. In an even-balanced first period the hosts took the lead after 17 minutes thanks to a Maximilian Egger goal on power play. In their following four power plays the Tirolese could not score again. Cortina did better with a man advantage, though, and Marco Sanna tied it at one with the only second-period goal. Despite Kitzbühel getting many pucks goalwards in the third period, the guests were more efficient. Nick Bruneteau put Cortina ahead for the first time in this game in the 43th minute. After Sanna doubled the score, Luca Barnabo made the preliminary decision with another power play marker. With the hosts pulling their goalie Paul Mocher, Cortina forward Mathieu Ayotte rounded off the scoring for a 1:5 final result.

Rittner Buam – Red Bull Hockey Juniors 2:6 (0:1, 0:2, 2:3)

The Rittner Buam had to compete without their top scorer Alex Frei for the first time, who will miss the rest of the season. The Red Bulls Hockey Juniors started with a lot of pressure offensively and captured the lead after six minutes. Nico Feldner had the right anticipation and converted a rebound for the 1:0. Markus Spinell had the big chance for the equalizer but Goalie Leevi Laasko proofed his reactions. Tobias Schmitz nearly doubled the lead but only hit the inside of the post. The Juniors also had a successful start into the second period. Filip Varejcka let Tragust no chance and scored the 2:0 with a well-placed shot. Feldner even increased in the 35th minute with his second goal of the night. But the Buam fought back and Simon Kostner scored the Buam’s first goal right in the starting minute of the final period. The Juniors had the right answer and recreated the three goals lead two minutes later. The Buam still didn’t give up and Thomas Spinell narrowed the gap again in the 43rd minute. Casper Evertsson brought the decision six minutes before the end and increased to 5:2. Huber finally created the result of 6:2 with his second of the night.

With its third consecutive win the EHC Alge Elastic Lustenau stayed in touch to the top-4. The currently fifth-ranked Austrian side booked a 3:1 road-win against HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice and is now two points behind the fourth place and has two more games to play in the regular season. Jesenice remains ninth. After the Steelers gained one point past gameday at Asiago, they headed into the game with high expectations. In the first five minutes the home team hit two crossbars. Soon later, it was the road team opening the scoring thanks to Max Wilfan. After putting a lot of pressure on the guests, the hosts equalized by Luka Kalan in the 34th minute. Again Jesenice struggled on the offensive-end because of Lustenau’s goalie Mathieu Corbeil, who had 48 saves in the end. Their top-scorer Marc-Olivier Vallerand realized a shorthander almost at the buzzer of the second for another lead. In the last period the Steelers were still constantly attacking, but the guests scored again out of their rare opportunities with Eetu-Ville Juhani Arkiomaa placing the final result.

EK Die Zeller Eisbären vs. HC Fassa Falcons 5:3 (2:3, 2:0, 1:0)

After trailing 1:3 in the first frame, the EK Die Zeller Eisbären snatched up a 5:3 home-win against bottom-placed HC Fassa Falcons and narrowed the gap for participating in the pre-playoffs being only one point behind twelfth-place Kitzbühel. Fassa suffered the 16th straight defeat. The guests got off the better start but accepted the first goal against while being shorthanded by Mans Hansson. Still Fassa was more effective on the offensive-end and turned the game around within 62 seconds thanks to Diego Iori and Marco Marzolini. After Fabian Scholz got penalized later, Iorie doubled the lead with his second goal of the night. Daniel Nageler pulled one back on a shorthanded-situation about seven seconds to go in the first. The hosts kept the momentum in the second: David Franz tied the game around halfway through the middle frame and Tobias Dinhopel gave the Austrian side a 4:3-lead, while Paul Koudelka rounded off the score early in the last.

HC Pustertal Wolves – VEU Feldkirch 6:0 (1:0, 2:0, 3:0)

On Saturday leader HC Pustertal Wolves reached the 100-point mark this season with a 6:0 home win against VEU Feldkirch. The South Tyrolean booked their 11th shutout this season, the second in a row. While Feldkirch lost for the first time after three consecutive wins, the Austrian side is not able to reach the top-4 anymore. From the beginning, leader Pustertal seemed very stable and put a lot of pressure on the guests. After the wolves wasted two penalties, Raphael Andergassen opened the scoring on equal stretch. Early in the second Max Oberrauch doubled up for the host. Further, Feldkirch was again not able to overcome Colin Furlong and the home team increased its lead seconds before the last break. After dominating the last frame too, Pustertal scored three more goals and celebrated a huge shutout in the end.

Sterzing returned to the victory with one goal in each period as they stopped the race of Ljubljana after nine consecutive victories. Thanks to this success the Broncos consolidated the eighth place as they distanced Jesenice. The home team has to give up four players: Erlacher, Sotlar, Borgatello and Kruselburger. Sterzing played in attack against a Ljubljana a bit unloaded in the game but that stopped two opponents powerplay. The Broncos played in the attack zone and the efforts of the hosts are rewarded by the goal at the end of the first period of Paolo Bustreo. In the second period the game was more balanced. Then Ljubljana grew a lot but they didn’t find the draw. In counterattack again Bustreo was decisive for the doubling: Wipptal obtained a lot with minimum effort. In the third frame Luca Felicetti scored the 3:0 for the home team. Gianluca Vallini earned the fourth shutout of the season. While Ljubljana's attack remained without goals for the second time in the season
