The 99ers were without goal scorer Kyle Beach, who was disregarded from coach Doug Mason, but were much better than in the first game. Kurtis MacLean fired the first shot goalwards after only 20 seconds but Salzburg netminder Bernhard Starkbaum made the save. Markus Pirmann missed the best chance from close range. It was a match at eye level as the Red Bulls became dangerous, too. While playing shorthanded Bill Thomas wasted the best opportunity on a break. Things changed in the middle frame. The hosts generated on power play but were not able to put it in. At the other end Brett Olson passed to Layne Viveiros who opened the scoring. After Michael Schiechl was not able to double the lead with a solo attempt, the Styrians bounced back. Daniel Woger picked up pace in the neutral zone and got a shot on Starkbaum who could not control the puck and then Michael Boivin tied it on a rebound. Soon later Thomas Raffl restored Salzburg's lead and it got even better for the reigning champions as Matthias Trattnig lit the lamp after a break away. Now the Red Bulls were on top of things and Thomas added a fourth goal for a 4:1 lead after 40 minutes. Graz tried everything to come back in the final 20 minutes but the visitors did well defensively. They ran down the clock for a 2:0 series lead.
