Release from 09.01.2025
On Thursday's Alps Hockey League game day, the chasing duo of Rittner Buam SkyAlps and EK Zeller Eisbären secured victories, piling the pressure on the idle league leaders SIJ Acroni Jesenice. Additionally, the "bottom duo" of Red Bull Hockey Juniors and HC Gherdeina also picked up wins – the latter with an overtime victory.
Ritten delivers another blowout win
After their 7-1 win against leaders Jesenice, the Rittner Buam SkyAlps recorded another blowout victory. The South Tyrolean squad cruised to an 8-1 win over KHL Sisak, narrowing the gap to Jesenice to just two points. The "Buam" dominated from the opening puck drop, taking the lead just 22 seconds in and closing out the first period with a commanding 5-0 lead. Sisak had no response and suffered their third consecutive defeat. Diego Cuglietto led the charge for Ritten with a two-goal performance and added an assist.
Zell back on track
The EK Zeller Eisbären bounced back from two straight losses to return to winning ways, putting more pressure on league leaders Jesenice. Zell skated to a 5-3 win on Thursday night against the Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan, who are slowly losing touch with the league's top five. The "Eisbären" came out strong, building a 3-0 lead by the 27th minute. The Broncos managed to cut the deficit three times, but Zell's victory was never seriously in doubt.
Gherdeina continues upward trend
HC Gherdeina picked up their third win in five games, further confirming their resurgence. Previously, Gröden had suffered six straight losses, finding themselves at the bottom of the standings. Meanwhile, Cortina missed an opportunity to solidify their spot in the top five, though they salvaged a point against Gherdeina. In a low-scoring affair, Gröden took the lead on a power play, while Cortina equalized in the second period. After a scoreless third, Davide Schiavone sealed the deal for Gherdeina in overtime.
Red Bull Juniors keep pace
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors picked up their second win in three games, keeping themselves within reach of the lower third of the standings. The Salzburg side secured a 5-3 victory over the Hockey Unterland Cavaliers on Thursday night. The Austrian hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the 21st minute and held onto the two-goal margin through the second period. The Cavaliers clawed back in the final frame, tying the game by the 51st minute. However, Salzburg responded quickly with a power-play goal and ultimately closed it out 5-3.
