Salzburg came out strong in Sweden and grabbed an early lead when Dennis Robertson blasted home a power-play goal in the 13th minute. However, the home side took control in the middle frame, scoring three unanswered goals to turn the game around.

Skellefteå extended their lead to 4-1 in the third period before Salzburg captain Mario Huber found the back of the net in the 55th minute to make it a 4-2 final. Despite the defeat, the Red Bulls showed plenty of fight against the favored Swedish champions.

“You can never be satisfied with a loss, but we can take some positives from this game. We showed great fighting spirit and rolled all four lines, which is something we can build on,” said Salzburg captain Mario Huber.

The result sees Salzburg miss out on the Champions Hockey League playoffs for just the second time in club history.
