Salzburg earns first CHL win

The EC Red Bull Salzburg celebrated the first victory in this Champions Hockey League season on Saturday. The reigning win2day ICE Hockey League champion won 5:2 at home against Stavanger. HCB Südtirol Alperia, on the other hand, suffered the next CHL defeat in Belfast. In addition, Linz, Klagenfurt and the Pioneers ended their preseason with victories.

Red Bull Salzburg welcomed the Stavanger Oilers from Norway for the fourth game of the 2023/24 season in the Champions Hockey League. The first period ended without goals, but just 20 seconds after the restart Peter Schneider gave the home side the lead. Salzburg now put on a lot of pressure and Paul Huber increased the lead to 2:0, followed by two more goals from Chay Genoway and Troy Bourke (PP) to make it 4:0 after 40 minutes. 



The Red Bulls got themselves into trouble with two penalties at the beginning of the final period and had to concede two early goals in a 3:5 shorthanded (44th) and a simple shorthanded (44th) period. After an exciting final period, Thomas Raffl netted an empty netter for a 5:2 final score for the Red Bulls, who deservedly celebrated their first CHL win and improved to 16th place in the standings.

Bolzano loses in Belfast
HCB Südtirol Alperia, on the other hand, had to admit defeat in Belfast. Although the Bolzano team fired more shots goalwards (13:8) in the first period, they trailed 0:2. Even in five PP situations, the white-reds could not score, in the end the "Foxes" lost 0:4 at the Belfast Giants.

Linz, Klagenfurt and Pioneers end preseason with wins
The Steinbach Black Wings won their third home game of the preseason as well, the Upper Austrians defeated the Straubing Tigers 3:2 after shootout on Saturday. Already after ten minutes the win2day ICE Hockey League representatives led 2:0, Matt MacKenzie (PP2) and Graham Knott scored in PP. Shortly after, the guests halved the deficit, in the middle period the Germans even managed the equalizer to 2:2. This score remained after regulation and also the overtime did not bring a decision. While goalie Rasmus Tirronen saved all Straubing attempts in the shootout, Shawn St-Amant provided the decisive goal.

The EC-KAC prevailed in Bled/Slovenia, against their league colleagues from HK Olimpija Ljubljana with 4:0. Homegrown goalkeeper Florian Vorauer recorded his first shutout in the ICE team. Lukas Haudum, Raphael Herburger, Fabian Hochegger and Johannes Bischofberger provided the goals for Klagenfurt.

The BEMER Pioneers Vorarlberg delivered a perfect dress rehearsal before the championship opener. The team from Feldkirch was clearly superior against the Swiss club Bellinzona and was particularly convincing on the offensive. In the end, the Pioneers won 8:1.
