For the first time, the win2day ICE Hockey League started the current Champions Hockey League season with four teams. While EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV, Hydro Fehérvár AV19 and HK SZ Olimpija were eliminated in the group stage, the EC Red Bull Salzburg made it to the knockout stage for the seventh time.

In the Round-of-16, the Red Bulls will now face the reigning champions Rögle Ängelholm. The Swedes already met an ICE club in the group stage with Fehérvár. Against the Hungarians as well as against the other two opponents they kept the upper hand in all duels. The 18-year-old Marco Kasper, who started his career at the EC-KAC, already scored seven points (3G / 4A) for Rögle in the current CHL season. If Salzburg advances to the quarterfinals, they would face Tappara Tampere (FIN) or HC Davos (SUI).
