Salzburg started strongly, dominated the opening period and showed good combinations, but could not overcome the Swiss goalie Tim Wolf. Benjamin Nissner put the Red Bulls ahead in the second period, but Zug quickly countered with three goals. Philipp Krening reduced the deficit for Salzburg before Dario Simion extended Zug's lead in the final period. Despite Troy Bourke's goal, the game ended 5:3, sealed by Zug's empty-net goal in the final minute.

Oliver David: "It was a good effort from both teams. I'm quite happy with our performance. We reacted well to the three quick Swiss goals. Good forecheck, good transition, good penalty-killing and good implementation of some tactical changes in training. And we saw a good game from all the new players. We saw a lot of good things today and we'll take that with us."
