Salzburg with weak team gains necessary point for CHL playoffs

A severely short-handed EC Red Bull Salzburg team earns the necessary point for advancing to the round of 16 of the Champions Hockey League in the last group game as guests of Fribourg-Gottéron. In addition to convalescents Peter Schneider, Dominique Heinrich, Thomas Raffl, Lukas Schreier and Ty Loney, the Red Bulls also had to do without Mario Huber, Luca Auer, Ali Wukovits and David Kickert (all ill). Nevertheless, the strongly rejuvenated team started hungry and with a lot of pressure into the decisive game for promotion. 20-year-old Lucas Thaler gave the Red Bulls the lead in the seventh minute. However, a double strike by the Swiss in the middle third shifted the pressure back on the reigning win2day ICE Hockey League champions. Despite numerous chances, the equalizer was not to succeed at first. In the 52nd minute, Peter Hochkofler ensured overtime and thus redemption. After a goalless overtime, Fribourg prevailed in the shootout. At this point, however, Salzburg's promotion was already certain, as the Stavanger Oilers won against Ilves Tampere in the parallel game. Salzburg thus finished Group E of the Champions Hockey League level on points with the Oilers, but could take second place due to the direct duels won.

Fehérvár ends CHL campaign with second win

Hydro Fehérvár AV 19 managed to end its first campaign in the Champions Hockey League with two wins. After the Hungarian participant from the win2day ICE Hockey League recorded its first CHL win last week as guests of GKS Katowice, the Devils followed it up a week later at home against the Polish team. Alexander Petan provided the lone goal of the encounter, putting them in third place in Group D of the Champions Hockey League.

Ljubljana must end first CHL season without points

HK SZ Olimpija was allowed to participate in the Champions Hockey League season 22/23 as the first Slovenian representative ever through a wildcard. However, the Dragons could not conquer any points in Group B. At the end of the European top competition, Ljubljana lost 5:2 against EV Zug.
