Salzburg secures clear win on CHL opener, Vienna lost at home

EC Red Bull Salzburg has celebrated a clear 5:2 away win against Cardiff Devils (GBR) in their first Champions Hockey League game this year. The Red Bulls were ahead 4:0 after 24 minutes. Vienna Capitals lost their CHL home opener against two-time CHL champion HC Frölunda (SWE) 1:4. Plus: On Thursday four teams of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga played some more preseason games.

Salzburg wins CHL opener clearly

EC Red Bull Salzburg has won his Champions Hockey Legue opener against Cardiff Devils (GBR) 5:2. The vice champion of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga secured a clear away win. Dominique Heinrich opened the game with a brace. John Hughes increased the lead later in the first. Michael Schiechl used a power play situation to catch a 4:0 lead more than 35 minutes to go. The hosts could manage to make two goals in the second. Goalkeeper Lukas Herzog, who made his debut against Cardiff, protected the lead of the Austrian side. With a bang-hard blue-liner of Martin Stajnoch a couple of minutes to go in the last Salzburg booked the clear 5:2 win in their CHL-opener. On Saturday the Red Bulls will face Växjö Lakers (SWE) away.

 
Vienna loses CHL opener against Frölunda

Vienna Capitals have lost their first Champions Hockey League home game. The Austrian side suffered a 1:4 defeat against Swedish top team HC Frölunda. The game started pretty well for the Viennese: After no one could score in the first, Peter Schneider took the lead for the team of new head coach Dave Cameron. Subsequently, the Caps made a good job, but came out short in the last minutes of the middle frame. Within two and a half minutes the Swedish side turned the game into a 3:1 lead. The Caps tried to come back, but in the end they had to accept a fourth goal. Their second CHL home game is on Saturday, facing Aalborg Pirates from Denmark.

Dornbirn secures win in the last frame

Dornbirn Bulldogs have won their preseason game against Suisse club EHC Olten 6:3. Without new-arrival Rob Bordson, who will miss a couple of weeks because of a knee injury, the Austrians had a calm start into the game, trailing one at the beginning of the third period. Then they enhanced their pace scoring four more goals to decide the game later in the last.

EC-KAC loses to Stavanger too

EC-KAC has suffered another defeat during his preseason campaign. The Carinthians lost 2:4 to Stavanger Oilers (NOR), who had beaten VSV on previous day. But the Austrian side had a great start into the game: Nick Peterson scored the first goal in less than one and a half minute. Thomas Koch increased the lead for the EBEL side in the 5th minute. The Oilers still tied the game in the first frame, using two short-handed situations at KAC side. They captured the lead later in the second. KAC had his chances in the last period, but could not manage to score a again. 

Overtime: Graz loses, Znojmo wins

Moser Medical Graz 99ers has lost their battle with Finnish side KooKoo 3:4 after overtime. New-arrival Ty Loney and Colton Yellow Horn with a brace tied the game twice for the team of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. In overtime KooKoo had the better ending on their side. HC Orli Znojmo celebrated an overtime win in the first game of this years Tatra Cup in Slowakia. The “eagles” beat the eight-time Slovakian champion HC Kosice 4:3. New-arrival Allen McPherson decided the game after four minutes in extra time.
