Friday’s win2day ICE Hockey League action delivered plenty of goals and intense battles. In an exciting top match, EC Red Bull Salzburg claimed a 4-2 away win against the Moser Medical Graz99ers. With the victory, the Red Bulls leapfrogged the 99ers in the standings and are now second, seven points behind league leaders EC-KAC, who narrowly defeated the Pioneers Vorarlberg 5-4. Important points in the fight for the Top-10 went to the Vienna Capitals, who beat HC Falkensteiner Pustertal 4-3, and EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV, who won 6-2 against the Steinbach Black Wings Linz. Eighth-placed Vienna and eleventh-placed Villach remain separated by just three points. HCB Südtirol Alperia had no trouble in the Tyrol derby against HC TIWAG Innsbruck (5-0), while Olimpija Ljubljana made a big step toward the Top-6 with a 4-3 away win at Hydro Fehérvár AV19.
In a fiercely contested match with 22 penalties, including four game misconducts, Salzburg emerged with a 4-2 victory at Graz. The home team led 2-1 after 40 minutes, but the visitors turned the game around in the final 15 minutes. Travis St. Denis equalized at 2-2, Florian Baltram scored the 3-2 game-winner in the 52nd minute, and St. Denis sealed the win with an empty-net goal late in the game, his second goal of the night. Graz suffered their first home defeat after six consecutive wins, while Salzburg claimed their second win in four season meetings.
Vienna ends Pustertal’s winning streak
The Vienna Capitals ended HC Pustertal’s four-game winning streak, securing crucial points in the Top-10 race. In front of 5,700 fans, Jeremy Gregoire scored a double in the first nine minutes to give Vienna a 2-0 lead. Pustertal’s Rok Ticar responded with two goals, but the Capitals pulled ahead to 3-1 by the 36th minute. Pustertal struck twice early in the third period to equalize, yet Linden Vey scored in the 50th minute to secure Vienna’s home win.
Villach wins at home against Linz
Although still eleventh, EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV moved level on points with Linz, thanks to a 6-2 home victory. Three goals were scored in the opening 3 minutes and 23 seconds, with Villach netting two. By the 11th minute, the hosts led 3-1. The decisive 4-1 came in the 41st minute. Linz pulled back to 2-4 but took risks and conceded two empty-net goals in the final three minutes. Villach celebrated their second consecutive win, while Linz suffered a third straight defeat.
KAC narrowly beats Pioneers
League leaders EC-KAC defeated the Pioneers Vorarlberg 5-4. Klagenfurt trailed 2-3 until the 41st minute but equalized in shorthanded play through Raphael Herburger, before Fabian Hochegger put them ahead 4-3. The Pioneers responded to make it 4-4, but only 68 seconds later Nick Petersen scored the game-winner. It was KAC’s sixth victory in their last seven matches.
Bolzano dominates Tyrol derby
Two days after a narrow 5-4 overtime win in Tyrol, HCB Südtirol Alperia left no doubts at home, defeating HC TIWAG Innsbruck 5-0 in the derby in front of 3,300 fans. Dustin Gazley scored twice, and goalie Sam Harvey stopped all 27 shots for his third shutout of the season. Three goals came in the second period, with one in the first and last periods each. For fourth-placed Bolzano, just one point behind second-placed Salzburg, it was their ninth consecutive derby win over the Sharks.
Ljubljana wins at Fehérvár
Sixth-placed Olimpija Ljubljana claimed a 4-3 away win at Hydro Fehérvár AV19, gaining breathing room in the Top-6 race, now 14 points ahead of the Hungarians. The Slovenian side led 3-1 after 20 minutes and 4-1 after 30. Fehérvár fought back to 3-4 with three minutes remaining, but Ljubljana held on for their second consecutive league win, handing Fehérvár their fifth loss in a row. On Saturday, Ljubljana travels to FTC-Telekom in Budapest, while Fehérvár hosts Pustertal.
