EC Red Bull Salzburg had a perfect start into the first semifinal game against EC-KAC: Thomas Raffl finished the first attack after just 86 seconds for an early lead. Bill Thomas came close to make the 2:0 in a Power Play. In minute 8 Mark Popovic was successful for Klagenfurt from the blue line, but the goal was not allowed by the referees, because Marco Brucker skated into goalie Bernhard Starkbaum before. Both teams then took penalties, but failed to take advantage from their chances. The Carinthians even could not score, when playing 5-on-3 for 73 seconds. After the re-start Tomas Duba stopped John Hughes from scoring. Then Klagenfurt got the momentum, but goalie Bernhard Starkbaum was not to beat from Thomas Hundertpfund, Manuel Ganahl, Kevin Kapstadt or Ziga Pance. Better did the Champion: After a counter Ryan Duncan added the 2:0. At the beginning of period 3 Stefan Geier was able to score the first goal for EC-KAC in a shorthanded situation. Just moments later the forward also had the chance to equalize, but this time he failed to score. The Red Jackets then also could not take advantage from another Power Play. On the other side Ryan Duncan made the 3:1. The last good chance for a comeback missed KAC Captain Manuel Geier. In minute 59 Michael Schiechl fixed the 4:1-win for EC Red Bull Salzburg with an Empty net Shorthander. Game two of the best-of-seven-series follows already on Friday at Klagenfurt.
