“We were always aware even before that it’s difficult to win the league. We felt that in the playoff series. The league is very deep. There are several teams that want to be at the top and also have the potential to do so. That’s why we know that every year it’s an incredibly tough battle and that every streak eventually comes to an end. But now we want to start a new one,” says Peter Schneider in his season review. After four straight titles, EC Red Bull Salzburg were dethroned in the quarterfinals by Pustertal last campaign.

This summer, the Red Bulls signed five new imports, brought in Alan Letang as a new head coach, and added Jason Morgan as an additional assistant coach. “When a new coach arrives, he always brings his own experiences and ideas. So far, it’s been very refreshing. Both coaches who came in are great guys. They’ve already taught us a lot and have an excellent relationship with us players. I’m therefore very optimistic; we’re heading in the right direction,” Schneider says.

CHL opener against Cologne
The 35-year-old is entering his sixth season with Salzburg. In 390 win2day ICE Hockey League games, the winger has recorded 374 points so far. After an intensive preseason and four test games, the Red Bulls begin their new Champions Hockey League campaign on Thursday. First, the ten-time ICE champion hosts Kölner Haie at home; two days later, Liberec visits Salzburg. “In the preseason, we deliberately wanted to play against top European teams. Because the level in the Champions Hockey League is incredibly high. It will be interesting games and a bit of a benchmark. We’re especially excited that it starts at home,” he says.

Open-air experiences
On September 18, Salzburg kick off the new win2day ICE Hockey League season with a home game against EC-KAC. Another regular-season matchup with Klagenfurt will take place at a special location at the end of January: the teams will meet at the open-air event at the ski jump in Bischofshofen. For Schneider, the “Mountain Classic” will be his third outdoor game: “I already played two open-air games in America at the University of Notre Dame. One was at Soldier Field, the football stadium of the Chicago Bears, the other at Fenway Park. It was freezing there—I remember that exactly. Those were incredibly great experiences, and this time will also be a fantastic experience for the participating teams and the fans.”
