Release from 22.11.2024
The 20th round of the win2day ICE Hockey League was dominated by the away teams, who were victorious in all encounters. Reigning champions EC Red Bull Salzburg clearly defeated league leaders Hydro Fehérvár AV19 5:1, while the EC-KAC won the pack derby convincingly 4:0 at the Moser Medical Graz99ers. EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV, the spusu Vienna Capitals and Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey also celebrated shutouts. Asiago won a close game 1:0 after overtime against the Pioneers Vorarlberg. In the sixth game of the day, Steinbach Black Wings Linz remained in top form and claimed their fifth win in a row with a 4:1 victory at Olimpija Ljubljana.
The defending champions EC Red Bull Salzburg won 5:1 at league leaders Hydro Fehérvár AV19, inflicting the highest defeat of the season on the Hungarians. Until this game, Fehérvár had only conceded 30 goals and lost only one of their last ten games. For Salzburg, on the other hand, it was their fifth win in a row, impressively confirming the strong form of the fourth-placed team in the table. During the week, RBS had already reached the quarter-finals of the Champions Hockey League with a commanding 5:0 home win against Lahti. In Hungary, Benjamin Nissner put the visitors ahead in the 15th minute while short-handed, causing the first moment of shock among the 4,000 fans in the Alba Arena. Salzburg extended its lead to 3:0 in the second period before the home side scored for the first time. In the final ten minutes of the game, a brace from Ryan Murphy completed the clear victory. It was the defender's first brace of the season. Salzburg had already won the first game of the season 3:1.
KAC clearly wins the pack derby
In the 148th pack derby between the Moser Medial Graz99ers and the EC-KAC, the KAC celebrated their 98th victory. The 4:0 victory in front of a sold-out crowd at the Merkur Eisstadion in Graz also saw the visitors take revenge for their 2:4 home defeat on October 4. Defenseman David Maier put the sixth-placed team in the lead as early as the fourth minute, before Nick Pastujov increased the lead to 2:0 in the 16th minute on the power play. Fabian Hochegger (37.) and Jan Mursak (53.) then increased the score further, enabling the KAC to celebrate their second shutout win of the season. Goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm shone with 38 saves. The Graz99ers, who lost again for the first time after three wins, are still in third place.
Clear win for Villach in Innsbruck
Another highlight was delivered by EC iDM Wärmepumpen VSV, who celebrated a clear 6:0 win at HC TIWAG Innsbruck. After a tight first period, which ended with the visitors leading 1:0, Villach turned up the heat in the second period and scored five goals between the 22nd and 34th minute. Kevin Hancock and Benjamin Lanzinger each scored a brace. No further goals were added to the scoreboard after that. VSV goalkeeper J.P. Lamoureux was unable to finish the game due to injury. It was one of three wins from the last five games for Villach, who are tenth in the table. Innsbruck, who are in twelfth place, have only won one game after OT against Asiago in their last six games.
Linz continues successful run
Meanwhile, fifth-placed Steinbach Black Wings Linz continued their run of success with a 4:1 win over Olimpija Ljubljana, their fifth win in a row - the longest active winning streak in the league. In front of 2,400 spectators in Ljubljana, Julian Pusnik put Linz ahead in the eighth minute. Brian Lebler increased the lead to 2:0 in the 44th minute, before Logan Roe extended the advantage just three minutes later while short-handed. Five minutes before the end, Greg Moro even made it 4:0 for BWL. However, Rasmus Tirronen missed his second shutout in a row, as Nik Simsic scored just seconds later to make the final score 1:4.
Close games in Vorarlberg and Bruneck
In the game between the Pioneers Vorarlberg and Migross Supermercati Asiago Hockey, the visitors narrowly won 1:0 after overtime. The game-winning goal was scored by Tanner Kaspick in the 61st minute. It was the center's fourth goal of the season. Goaltender Justin Fazio saved 35 shots and celebrated his first shutout of the season. Overall, it was the third game without conceding a goal for the team in eleventh place in the table, who were victorious for the first time after six consecutive defeats. Bottom-placed Pionners Vorarlberg suffered their third defeat in a row. The Pioneers were victorious in Asiago in the first game of the season (3:1).
The spusu Vienna Capitals also celebrated a narrow victory. The Viennese team won 1:0 at HC Pustertal. Christof Kromp scored the only goal of the game in the eleventh minute, his fifth goal of the season. There was a special premiere for goalkeeper Peyton Jones, who celebrated a shutout in his very first outing in the win2day ICE Hockey League. The 28-year-old American had only been signed during the international break. In ninth place in the table, the Capitals are now level on points with eighth-placed Pustertal. The South Tyroleans, meanwhile, suffered their fourth defeat in a row.7
Bolzano against Vienna only Saturday game
The spusu Vienna Capitals are back in action tomorrow, Saturday. The Austrian capital will then play at second-placed HCB Südtirol Alperia, who were free from play on Friday. In their first game of the season on September 29, the South Tyroleans won 2:0 in Vienna. The game in the Sparkasse Arena Bolzano kicks off at 19:45.
