In the 2023/24 season, Steven Owre was voted Most Valuable Player of the win2day ICE Hockey League - back then still in the Pioneers Vorarlberg jersey. This summer, the 29-year-old Canadian returned to the league and rejoined a team in western Austria with HC TIWAG Innsbruck. In this interview, Owre talks about his reasons for returning, his memories of the derbies against his new employer and his goals with the “Sharks”.

With an impressive 72 scoring points, Owre played a key role in the Pioneers' first-ever playoff appearance in the 2023-24 season. The forward also shone in the duels with his new club: He collected six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in the pre-playoff series against Innsbruck. “I remember that series particularly well,” says Owre. "All the games were well attended, with a great atmosphere and lots of support on both sides. I'm looking forward to more of these games this season."

The move to Innsbruck is an important step for the striker - both athletically and personally: "I'm very excited about Innsbruck. It's a great opportunity for me and I hope I can help the club achieve its goal of returning to the playoffs," explains Owre. Last season was disappointing for the “Sharks”, with the team finishing bottom of the table at the end of the Regular Season. Owre wants to help change that: "Last year was obviously not a good year for the club. The goal is very clear: to get into the playoffs. I'm looking forward to getting started in August."

Although the Canadian spent last season in Switzerland with La Chaux-de-Fonds (44 points), he didn't lose sight of the ICE: “I was able to follow the league a bit because some good friends of mine played there,” he says.

The forward is aware that the MVP title also comes with higher expectations. But Owre approaches the new task with confidence: "I think the expectations of me have definitely risen, but that's completely normal. I'm confident in my abilities and I know what type of player I am. For me, it's about leaving everything on the ice and helping my team succeed."
