Raphael Wolf (#5) of Steinbach Black Wings Linz, time 44:10 was involved in an incident deemed as Checking from Behind (IIHF Rule 43). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 - 'Careless'.

Tuesday night in Linz, Linz D'Man #5 Raphael Wolf was penalized with a 5 minute and game misconduct for Boarding Innsbruck forward #26 Daniel Leavens, causing an apparent injury.

As the video shows, Wolf attempts to clear the puck from his d'zone, which results in a turnover with the puck being retrieved by Leavens, which leaves Wolf from initially being a puck carrier to a puck defender. Leavens arriving at the puck first and Wolf seeing the back # of Leavens for enough time to minimize or avoid backside contact, Wolf finishes a check through the back of Leavens, sending him dangerously into the wall.

This is a check from behind.

It is important to note that although Leavens shifts slightly after playing the puck, this is not a case of a player turning immediately before contact in a way that turns a legal hit into an illegal one. From the point on releasing the puck on, Wolf see's nothing but Leavens number and with ample time to make a better decision, the oneness is on Wolf to deliver a hit in a legal fashion, avoid it entirely or minimize the force. Additionally, Wolf with no possible play on the puck or a puck first focus, winds up to deliver a hit through the back that propels an unaware Leavens forcefully and dangerously into the boards.

The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Raphael Wolf for 3 games and fined 600.00 euros. 2 game suspension for the current CFB and 1 additional game as a repeat offender.
