Braeden Shaw (#12) of Hydro Fehervar AV19, time 02:00 was involved in an incident deemed as Elbowing (IIHF Rule 45). The video evidence was sent to the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined
the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 - 'Careless'.

According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League PSC, Braeden Shaw (#12) of Hydro Fehervar AV19, will receive supplementary discipline under rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head or Neck.

Friday night in Szekesfehervar, Fehervar forward #12 Braeden Shaw, was involved in an incident deemed as elbowing, by the game officials, on Graz forward #19 Lukas Kainz. The incident was sent to the ICEHL PSC and determined supplementary discipline is required under Category 1 - 'Careless'.

As the video shows, Fehervar attempted an outlet pass, which came from behind the Fehervar net, creating a rimmed puck to be travel in the direction of Shaw, who typically would be the player to, at minimum, work to gain puck possession. Instead, Shaw chose to avoid puck possession, turn his body 180° to protect himself, with no regard for Kainz. In making the check, Shaw elevated up, making clear, forceful contact, with the head area of Kainz. This is deemed as an Illegal Check to the Head.

It is important to note, that although the game officials elected to assess the infraction as a 5 minute + GM elbow, the PSC has determined that the check is recklessly endangering to a player in a vulnerable and defenseless position, making forceful head contact, which is deemed an illegal check to the head. Kainz did have a regard for the puck and in attempting to make a play, in which he was neither in puck possession or control, received an illegal check, in which he had no opportunity to properly protect himself. Shaw had no regard for the puck and instead chose to spin, which created a situation where his back shoulder is the point of contact. It was taken into consideration, there is body to body contact, along with head contact, but making a check with your back is not deemed a legal play, leaving the onus on Shaw to avoid head contact. Kainz did play the remainder of the game, but sustained an apparent injury at the time of the check.

Key references:

  • This is an Illegal Check to the Head
