Braden Christoffer (#3) of HCB Südtirol Alperia, time 33:59 was involved in an incident deemed as an Illegal Check to the Head or Neck (IIHF Rule 48). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 - 'Careless'.

Wednesday night November 27, in Villach, Bozen center man #3 Braden Christoffer was involved in an incident deemed as a check to the head on Villach center man #16 Kevin Hancock.

As the video shows, with play in the Bozen attacking zone and multiple player in near vicinity of the puck, Christoffer skates across ice 90* to the area of the play. With Hancock in a battle for the puck, but never having possession or control of the puck, Christoffer enters the area in an defensive role to attempt to keep play in the attacking zone. Instead of playing or having a concern for the puck, Christoffer elects to deliver a forceful check that makes the head the main point of contact.

This is an illegal check to the head. It is important to note, both elements of a CTH rule are met on this play. 1st - the head is clearly the main point of contact of the hit, as Christoffer's left shoulder makes direct and forceful contact with the head of Hancock.
2nd - the head contact on this play is avoidable. Christoffer takes an angle of approach that cuts across the front of Hanckock's core and picks the head.
If Christoffer wishes to deliver this check legally, he must take an angle that hits through the shoulder and core of Hancock.

The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Braden Christoffer for 2 games and fined 400.00 euros.

To summarize:

  • This is a check to the head
