Filippo Rigoni (#89) of HC Migross Asiago, time 57:47, made contact with an opponent deemed as Slashing (IIHF Rule 61). Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 2 – ʻRecklessʼ.

Saturday night, December 20, in Dornbirn, Asiago D'man #89 Filippo Rigoni was assessed a 5-minute major penalty plus automatic game-misconduct for an incident on Bregenzerwald center-man #7 Mathias Haiböck deemed as slashing.

As the video shows, play is stopped following a goal. After the whistle, two players, including Haiböck, engage one another, creating an initial post-whistle altercation. Immediately following this incident, and as a third player entering the situation, Rigoni engages Haiböck. Rigoni winds up his stick and delivers a dangerous and forceful chop directly to the mid-section of Haiböck.

This is slashing.

While it is common in these situations for a defending player to use his stick to impede an opponent— sometimes involving a 5 minute + Game Misconduct slashing motion—what elevates this play tosupplementary discipline is the type, force, and location of the contact. Rigoni delivers a full wind-up, bringing his stick horizontally across with significant force and striking Haiböck in the mid-section. This action goes well beyond a typical stick check or battle. The violent swinging motion of the stick and the targeted area present a high risk of injury and are not considered acceptable under the rules.

As a result, and effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Filippo Rigoni, (89), for 2 games.

To summarize:

  • This is slashing
  • Overly aggressive
  • Not a repeat offender
