Paul Eisendle (#19) of Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan, time 29:51, made contact with an opponent deemed as Cross-Checking, IIHF Rule 59. Based on the video evidence, it is determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline - Category 1 – ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error.

Liable to happen as a consequence of, by intending to affect an opponent through a reactionary or accidental motion or the incident is deemed careless causing negligence.

Thursday night, March 28th, in Ritten, Sterzing forward #19 Paul Eisendle was involved in an incident deemed as cross-checking on Ritten forward #94 Ethan Szypula.

As the video shows, after Szypula cross checked an opponent and skated towards the corner, Eisendle skated directly after Szypula in an attempt to send retribution. As Szypula skated out of the corner towards open ice, Eisendle skated in close proximity in an effort to get Szypula's attention. In doing so, Eisendle made a unimpeded choice to raise his stick in a horizontal manner and delver a forceful cross check at a height near the head and neck area.

This is cross-checking.

It is important to note cross checking is a common infraction that is often adequately penalized by the on-ice officials. However, in this case multiple factors combine to elevate this play to the level where supplementary discipline is required. Firstly, this is not a legal play in hockey. Secondly, Eisendle has his stick horizontal, arm extension making contact at a height near to the top of the shoulder - near to the head and overly forceful. Lastly, Eisendle is chasing Szypula to create some form of retribution, considering he went directly at Szypula in the corner, tracked Szypula to open ice and then delivered a high forceful cross check in a dangerous manner. It is a case of a player taking an overly aggressive means, through the use of a stick. In short - it is not a legal hockey play.

Effective immediately, the Alps Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Paul Eisendle for 2 game's.

To summarize:

  • This is cross checking
  • Location of cross check
  • Not a repeat offender
