Salzburg produced an almost perfect performance in the first leg against the best team in the league phase. Ryan Murphy put the home side ahead in the 17th minute, but the visitors from Sweden equalized through Marian Studenic just 33 seconds later. The Red Bulls dominated proceedings in the second period and showed an enormously strong performance - even when short-handed. In the 29th minute, Nash Nienhuis scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2:1, his first goal in the RBS jersey.

Färjestad Karlstad appeared to have equalized again a few minutes later, but after video review the referees decided not to award the goal. Instead, they gave Jeremy Groleau a match penalty for an illegal check to the head or neck. This gave Salzburg a five-minute powerplay, which they used to their advantage: New signing Scott Kosmachuk increased the lead to 3:1 in the 38th minute, the 30-year-old's third goal in his seventh game. The score remained 3:1 for the home side until the final buzzer, meaning Salzburg go into the second leg in Sweden on Tuesday, December 17 at 19:00 with a two-goal lead.
