Vienna freezes first spot in pick round

With a 6:3 road win against HCB Südtirol Alperia the spusu Vienna Capitals pinned down first place in pick round and remain unbeaten. The EC-KAC fastened its third spot in standings, after cruising past EC Red Bull Salzburg 6:0. The Carinthians celebrated its biggest win at Salzburg ever. Fehervar AV19 kept its chance for fourth spot in pick round and home advantage in the playoffs alive, after beating the Moser Medical Graz 99ers. The two games of the qualification round ended with home wins of EC Panaceo VSV and HC TWK Innsbruck “Die Haie”.

After a 6:3 road win against HCB Südtirol Alperia, the spusu Vienna Capitals remain unbeaten in the pick round and pinned down the first place. On Sunday the Viennese will have the first choice on picking the opponents for the quarterfinals. The South Tyrolean suffered their fourth straight defeat and have no chance any more for grabbing home advantage in the playoffs. Vienna already set the basis for the success in the first frame, taking a 4:0 lead. Today's third goal from Riley Holzapfel was the club's 200th goal in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga season. Bolzano managed to match the game speed in the second frame and reduced the deficit with Marco Insam and Markus Nordlund getting the champion on the scoreboard. Vienna still controlled the game and netted one more in the middle frame. The last period ended tied, with both teams scoring one more goal.

With a huge 6:0 road win against EC Red Bull Salzburg, the EC-KAC froze third spot in standings. The Carinthians celebrated their biggest win in Salzburg ever. With Fehervar snatching up three points against Graz, the Red Bulls could not grab the fourth place and need to defend home advantage next game day. David Madlener replaced Lars Haugen in the net of KAC. The guests got off a perfect start, as Nick Petersen gave the Carinthians an early lead on their first powerplay. Stefan Geier and Matthew Neal made it more comfortable with two more goals in the first. Three more goals from the guests in the middle frame brought the early decision. In an open final frame no team could score and Madlener get his third shutout this season.

Fehervar AV19 celebrated a clear 4:1 home win against Moser Medical Graz 99ers and narrowed the gap to fourth place in standings. After Salzburg’s defeat against the EC-KAC, the Hungarians still have the chance to grab home advantage on the last game day. After two non-goal frames, the game became more thrilling in the last. Ty Wishart got his team on the scoreboard right at the beginning of the last and Tuomas Vänttinen doubled up. Graz’ Ken Ograjensek pulled one back about halfway through the last. In the end Fehervar increased their lead with two goals in the last 3,5 minutes and got the win.

With a 3:2 home win against the HC Orli Znojmo, the EC Panaceo VSV got its sixth straight victory in front of their home crowed. Despite the win, the Carinthians have no chance anymore entering the playoffs. If two teams are tied at the end of the pick respectively qualification round, the spot after 44 rounds will be the tiebreaker. In their last game in front of the home crowd, the “eagles” balanced an early deficit – Nicolas Hlava got the Czech side on the scoreboard not even one minute played – after 2,5 minutes. The first frame remained goalless. After the first intermission, the home team got off a great start. Blaine Down hit the post and soon later Johan Eriksson crowned the dominance of Villach with the second goal. Nicolas Petrik doubled up and got his colors on winning ways. Znojmo pulled one back in den middle frame and both teams entered the last very offensive. With Dan Bakala having some good saves, the VSV secured a tight home win in the end.

Fr, 08.03.2019: HC TWK Innsbruck „Die Haie“ vs. Dornbirn Bulldogs 5:1 (2:0, 1:1, 2:0)

At its last home game, the HC TWK Innsbruck “Die Haie” got a clear 5:1 win against the Dornbirn Bulldogs, who finished the season with two consecutive losses. John Lammers and Sascha Guimond gave the hosts a 2:0-lead after the first period. Tyler Spurgeon increased later in the second, while Scott Timmis pulled one back immediately for Dornbirn. The hosts still had the better of the play and made the decision with two more goals in the final period.
