The Black Wings came out hard for their first ever Qualification Round game and had some good chances early. VSV goalie Dan Bakala made some good saves, though. The visitors were out of luck when forward Brian Lebler only hit the post late and the period ended goalless. After the restart Villach became stronger and with Da DaSilva sitting in the penalty box, the home team took the lead as Blaine Down found the back of the net. Now Villach was the dominant side and came close to score a second but Alexander Lahoda only struck metalwork. Early in the third Dragan Umicevic got Linz on the scoreboard with a PP marker but soon later Down restored Villach's lead. The story repeated as Schofield's equalizer was answered by Jamie Fraser - 3:2. The Upper Austrians pulled their goalie early and Jerry Pollastrone made it a two-goal game. With Ouzas being back in his net, Justin Maylan rounded off the scoring for a 5:2 home win.
