Born in Oulu, Finland, Karhunen spent his youth years in his home country with the exception of a one-year stint in Canada with the Sarnia Sting in the OHL. Towards the end of the 2011/12 season, the former Finnish junior international moved to HC Slovan Bratislava on a loan basis and immediately celebrated the championship title in the Slovakian league. But that wasn't all: Between 2014 and 2016, he won three more titles in the Finnish top league - with Kärpät Oulu and Tappara Tampere.

Karhunen was also very successful with top clubs in the KHL, the Swiss National League and the DEL. Most recently, he was with the Straubing Tigers (DEL). Before that, the goalie played a total of 64 games for Swiss top club SC Bern from 2019 to 2021, where he impressed with a catch rate of over 90 percent and was one of the best goalkeepers in Switzerland.

Karhunen, who will already arrive in Villach on Friday, has signed a contract until the end of the current season. When he will make his debut in the jersey of the Blue-Whites is still open. Andreas Bernard has been signed off for him.
