Release from 26.08.2018
On Sunday six Erste Bank Eishockey Liga teams were in preseason action. With HC Bolzano, Dornbirn Bulldogs and Medvescak Zagreb three of them held the upper hand. Thanks to a 6:2 victory against Alps Hockey League side HK SŽ Olimpija Ljubljana the Croats even got a tournament win.
Medveswcak had the better of the play early in the game but was not successful on power play. It almost took 19 minutes until new arrival John Armstrong opened the scoring. Early in the middle frame Jordan Samuels-Thomas doubled the lead on power play. At the halfway point of the game both sides made a goalie change with Mathieu Corbeil being between Zagreb's pipes now. Soon later Nathan Perkovich added a third but Ljubljana scored two for a 3:2 score at the end of the second. Medvescak killed two early PPs in the third and with three minutes to go Sébastien Sylvestre made the game safe. In the final minute Sylvestre and Ivan Jankovic rounded off the scoring for a 6:2 result and tournament win.
Fehervar AV19 finished the Müller’s Fanshop Cup second as they lost 5-1 against Fishtown Pinguins Bremerhaven in the tournament’s finals. The first period started better for the Germans as they scored early on the powerplay and ex-Bolzano goalie Hübl seemed unbeatable in the net. At the end of the first 20 minutes, Fehervar missed a powerplay. The second period started five on four for Bremerhaven and eventually Slovenian national team player Urbas put the puck behind Carruth. The Germans pushed harder in the upcoming minutes until Jensen fouled and the Hungarians used this opportunity, Phillips shot in the open net on the powerplay. Koger and co. became more offensive after the goal, Kuralt and Laday both threatened but Hübl saved. Fehervar was the better team on ice at the beginning of the third period as well but the score remained 2-1. In the middle of the period, Moore and Carruth got into a fight and Bremerhaven played five on four, but the American goalie saved all shots. 6 minutes before the buzzer the puck went into the net again, Kolupaylo scored, then, one minute later Quirk increased the difference. Hari hit the crossbar, then Sofron missed at the end of the game and although Fehervar could finish the game on the powerplay, the DEL side added another goal.
After Bolzano and Klagenfurt losing the opening game at Vinschgau Cup in Latsch, at least the EBEL champion took a win on Sunday. The foxes beat Kölner Haie 4:1 with Daniel Glira and Alex Petan making the game safe with third-period goals. In today's second game a third-period equalizer by Mitch Wahl sent Klagenfurt's game against ERC Ingolstadt into the shootout. Despite having atwo-goal lead in the shootout, the Austrians suffered a 2:1 defeat to the tournament winners.
Just two days after suffering a tough 0:5 defeat against host Thomas Sabo Icetigers, the Vienna Capitals also lost their second game at „Mercedes-Benz Rent Cup 2018“. In their placement game against Straubing Tigers, the Viennese were trailing 0:5 after only 30 minutes. Kelsey Tessier scored the consolation goal in the third.
Dornbirn Bulldogs let a temporarily 3:0 lead in their home game against DEL2 champions Bietigheim Steelers slip away with the Germans tying the game with ten minutes to in the third. Only four minutes later Scott Timmins converted a perfect pass by Joel Broda to restore the lead. It was Timmins again, who added an empty netter in the final minute for a 5:3 win.
