Zagreb's Mike Aviani gets a one-game suspension

KHL Medvescak Zagreb forward Mike Aviani has received a one-game suspension for a Check to the Head or Neck in yesterday's road game against EC Red Bull Salzburg.

According to the Arbitrator and after reviewing video evidence, player Mike Aviani (#93) of KHL Medvescak Zagre, time 48:53, made contact with an opponent deemed as Checking to the Head or Neck, IIHF Rule 124. As per the 2017/18 EBEL GameBook Part I - Chapter III - § 10, video evidence was sent to PSC (IDOPS) for a final verdict.

Last night in Salzburg a play occurred that the is deemed Checking to the Head or Neck. With the opposing player receiving a pass and curling to progress into the attacking zone, Mike Aviani turns back towards the opposing player, for the purpose of a defensive play. In attempting to make a legal body check, Mike Aviani elevated up and into the opposing player. The incident was sent to the EBEL PSC and determined supplementary discipline is required. Due to the upwards and outwards body motion of Mike Aviani, the contact point on the opposing player was directly to the head. The principal point of contact was the head of the opposing player, with little to no body to body contact. The body check is at a low speed and not overly forceful. It is the contact to the opposing players head that needs to be avoided. With minimal speed, the requirement to make body to body contact is available
and required by Mike Aviani.
 
Effective immediately, Mike Aviani is suspended for 1 game. The EBEL PSC determined the incident to be a Category 1 – ‘Careless’ – insufficient attention or thought to avoid harm or error. Liable to happen as a consequence of, by intending to affect an opponent through a reactionary or accidental motion or the incident is deemed careless causing negligence.
