Zell am See entered the game as favourites but had to work hard in their own end for most of the first period. However, the home side took advantage of a Klagenfurt mistake in their defensive zone when Marküs Pöck opened the scoring. It was the only goal in a fast-paced first period. The fans saw an open exchange of blows in the middle frame with both teams failing to score from some promising occasions. After both goalies kept a clean sheet in this period, Zell am See doubled the lead in the third: Frederik Widen lit the lamp on power play and made himself a birthday present in the 47th minute. Just one minute later Marco Brucker got the Carinthians on the scoreboard to make it a one-goal game again. The visitors pulled their goalie Thomas Dechel in a final push but were not able to tie the game. Zell am See won the Qualification Round opener and extended their lead.
