For the first time in the ten-year history of the Alps Hockey League, two South Tyrolean teams — HC Meran/o Pircher and HC Gherdeina valgardena.it — will face off in the final. At the same time, it is also the first time that the two lowest-seeded teams have reached the championship series. The opening game of the “best-of-7” final will take place on Saturday in Merano. HC Meran/o Pircher secured their first-ever final appearance on Thursday with a 3–2 away win against KHL Sisak. A major role in the victory was played by goaltender Andreas Bernard, who stopped 48 of 50 shots on goal. In the interview, the 35-year-old looks back on the dramatic semifinal series and expresses his great joy about reaching the final in his last professional season. For the first time in the league’s ten-year history, two teams from South Tyrol will face off in the final – and, remarkably, they are also the two lowest-seeded teams (HCM – 7th, GHE – 8th). Merano secured their historic first-ever Final appearance with a narrow 3–2 victory in Game 7 on the road against KHL Sisak, in front of 2,300 fans.
